Biography

Ruth B. — the 25-year-old Canadian-Ethiopian singer and songwriter who’s captivated millions since her 2015 global hit “Lost Boy” — has released a new version of her single “If I Have A Son” featuring the Harlem Gospel Travelers, in celebration of Black History Month. “If I Have A Son” reflects on the dangers Black children are subjected to because of their identity. “No matter what you say, no matter what you do, this world will never be as friendly to you,” sings Ruth, a heartbreaking truth delivered with a chilling beauty. A young artist in tune with the current social changes that are reframing life and art, Ruth wrote and released the poignant and thought-provoking, “If I Have A Son”, in June 2020 as a contribution to the Black Lives Matter movement, collaborating with critically acclaimed photographer Flo Ngala for the powerful imagery in the video. Says Ruth of the track, “‘If I Have a Son’ is an honest reflection of how I have been feeling. The murder of George Floyd has served as a wake-up call for a lot of people, but for Black people everywhere, this has always been a reality.” “If I Have A Son” featuring the Harlem Gospel Travelers premiered on CBC’s q with Tom Power.
